Warning: Don’t pay for government grant information

17 May 2024

Business.gov.au warns ‘don’t get caught out by scams. The government will never ask you to pay for grant information’. They have put together some tips to help you identify authentic government grant sources.

Government grant information is available free online. You never need to pay for it.

When you start to look for government grants to support your business, you may find fraudulent websites and services that claim to provide access to government grants information.

It’s important to remember that all available state, territory and federal government grant information can be accessed for free through official government sources.

Tips to protect your business from scams

  • We will never ask you to pay for access to government grant information – be wary of websites that charge fees for grant-related services.
  • Government grants are awarded based on merit – you can’t pay money for special access or consideration.
  • You can pay for a third-party provider to help write your grant – but make sure you pick a reputable service.
  • Make sure you collect information directly from the relevant government website – look for .gov.au in their URL extension.

How can I tell if I’m using a government website?

Some websites may try to imitate government websites by using things like:

  • official looking images
  • government logos
  • misleading web addresses e.g. www.officialgovtgrants.com.au

Look for a web address with ‘.gov.au’ in the url to ensure you’re using an official government website.

Where can I find government grants information?

You can find all available state, territory and federal government grant information for free through official government sources, such as government websites.
