17 local businesses have now successfully completed the ‘Trim Your Bin’ program aimed at improving waste management practices. The new initiative is a regional approach to reducing waste to landfill and embracing circular economy solutions. A total of 36 participating businesses across the Mornington Peninsula Shire, Frankston City and City of Casey councils participated, achieving very promising results.

The initial waste assessments generated 119 personalised recommendations to action. 63 (57%) of these recommended actions were implemented across all participating councils.

The program yielded several key benefits for businesses: enhanced staff engagement and awareness around waste management, reduced greenhouse gas emissions through better recycling and less landfill use, support for circular economy activities and high stakeholder satisfaction.
Examples of actions implemented by businesses including improving signage for bins, exploring eco-friendly packaging alternatives, staff training on the proper disposal of items and participating in the Container Deposit Scheme, among many others.
Overall, businesses were highly engaged and receptive to change.
The ‘Trim Your Bin’ program was carried out in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, with support from environmental consultancy Cool Planet. Future rounds are expected to incorporate feedback from participant surveys, refine strategies based on lessons learned and address initial challenges for even greater impact.
