Local Businesses Champion Waste Reduction in ‘Trim Your Bin’ Initiative

As awareness around environmental responsibility grows, local businesses are stepping up to reduce their impact. Chipotle Mexican Restaurant and Alba Thermal Springs & Spa are among the 17 businesses that have completed the Trim Your Bin program, setting strong examples in the space of waste management. Here’s how they’re leading the way.

Chipotle Mexican Restaurant

Flavour with a side of environmental care

Across from the beach and in the heart of Rye, Chipotle Mexican Restaurant is known not only for its authentic Mexican dishes but also for its eco-conscious efforts. Through the Trim Your Bin program, Chipotle has cut general waste by 44% and boosted recycling by 32%, proving that sustainable practices can enhance rather than complicate day-to-day operations.

Chipotle’s key actions include:

  • Eco-friendly packaging: Transitioning takeaway containers to sustainable alternatives to reduce plastic use.
  • Smart waste separation: New bins and clear signage to help staff and customers separate waste effectively.
  • Commingled recycling: Adding an outdoor recycling bin for aluminium, glass, and plastics.
  • Organic waste management: Implementing home composting for organic waste to reduce landfill contributions.

By reducing waste disposal costs and making sustainability a seamless part of its operations, Chipotle has created a greener dining experience for its customers.

Alba Thermal Springs & Spa

Sanctuary meets sustainability.

Surrounded by natural beauty in Fingal, Alba Thermal Springs & Spa has combined luxury and relaxation with a commitment to sustainability. Already carbon-neutral, Alba leveraged the Trim Your Bin program to further refine its waste management practices, reducing general waste by an impressive 65% and increasing recycling by 23%.

Alba’s sustainability initiatives include:

  • Advanced food waste management: Exploring advanced solutions like food digesters and dehydrators to manage restaurant waste effectively.
  • Circular economy practices: Sourcing sustainable packaging options to cut down on soft plastics from towel deliveries.
  • Enhanced recycling: New bins and signage support better waste sorting and reduced contamination.
  • Reusable and recyclable products: All dining and spa items are served in recyclable, reusable or refillable containers, while retail products use eco-friendly packaging.

Alba’s ongoing focus on staff education ensures these sustainable practices are well-integrated into everyday operations, setting a new benchmark for achieving luxury with minimal environmental impact.

The Bin Trim Program provided useful educational resources to motivate our team, further reduce our waste and increase our recycling.

Alba Thermal Springs & Spa

A greener future, one business at a time

Chipotle and Alba exemplify how local businesses can and should lead the way in sustainability, one eco-friendly initiative at a time. Their actions demonstrate how small changes in waste management can lead to meaningful environmental impact, setting a strong example for others in the community and highlighting the power that businesses hold in this space.
