Recognising the importance of creating an inclusive and welcoming environment, Malia Hair Boutique applied for and received a $5,000 accessibility grant from Mornington Peninsula Shire. The grant was used to install acoustic panelling in the salon’s ceiling, significantly enhancing the customer experience, particularly for clients with specific accessibility needs.
The Challenge
Before the installation of the acoustic panelling, the salon’s environment was challenging for some clients, particularly those with hearing impairments, dementia, or autism spectrum disorder. The noise levels and echoes in the salon made it difficult for clients to communicate with their stylists and fully enjoy their salon experience.
The Solution
With the help of the accessibility grant, Malia Hair Boutique installed acoustic panels in the ceiling, creating a quieter and more comfortable atmosphere. This simple yet impactful change has made a world of difference for the salon’s clients.

“Adding acoustic sound panelling to our salon has been a game changer, especially for our clients with dementia. The quieter environment has helped reduce anxiety and overstimulation, making it much easier for these clients to feel comfortable and safe during their visits. We’ve noticed that clients who used to struggle with the noise are now returning regularly, and their families and carers appreciate the added care we’ve taken to make the space welcoming for everyone. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how a simple change has allowed us to serve our community better and make a positive difference.”
