This talk is dedicated to a very important topic that was discussed at the MP Shire’s Food
Economy and Agroecology Strategy launch – getting young farmers on land.
At the strategy launch, several young farmers, a landholder and Tammi Jonas unpacked various aspects of this topic, in particular barriers.
In this next session, we have assembled a diverse range of young farmers and affliated individuals to explore broader solutions to the many challenges that young farmers currently face when getting on the land. This talk will be an online panel discussion with five local and leading guest speakers:
Young farmers currently face many significant challenges when getting on land, including
access to land, financial barriers, climate change risks and educational limitations.
In addition, the average age of farmers in Australia was 58 in 2017/18 (ABS, 2020), which indicates a strong need to encourage and support young farmers to get on the land to secure Australia’s food systems.
Given this multi-faceted topic, our panelists represent varying perspectives and solutions e.g.
growing produce for different markets, educating young farmers, land leasing, family
succession and forming farming collectives.
The solutions that are learned from this talk aim to be used for support mechanisms and actions, so be sure to voice your opinions!
